BEFORE YOU SLIDE:
Here are things you will want to know to make sure your experience is a smooth one! With over 700 ft of steep sliding down Church Street between the intersections of Washington and 12th, you are not going to be disappointed!
What happens if it rains?
This event runs much like lifeguards handle a pool. It runs as usual in light rain. The only thing that will halt the event is thunder and lightning. Just like the pool, we have to wait 20 minutes until the last time we hear thunder or see lightning before reopening the slide. If your timeslot loses more than 40 minutes, we can offer you a later time slot once the storm passes. This is a rain or shine event and will NOT be canceled unless there are torrential thunderstorms.
What do I wear to the slide?
Wear something you plan to get wet. This can include swimsuits, swim shorts, swim shoes and water sandals or crocs. We suggest any footwear be fastened behind the ankle to prevent the risk of flying off on the slide. The slide is equipped with nozzles that spray from the top and bottom, and sliders coast into a pool at the bottom- you WILL get soaked.
Is there a place to change before or after my slide?
The armory is located at the base of the slide and can be used for check-in and dropping belongings. There are bathrooms located inside the armory. We suggest coming already dressed to slide, and if you need to change after your shift, using any of the stall locations prior to leaving. Please note that sliders for the next shift will be arriving 30 minutes ahead of their shift, so these areas could get congested.
Can I bring my own inner tube?
NO need. We have plenty for everyone and they were designed to use on the slide. We will permit certain types, but they will require approval at check-in.
Can I watch the slide if I do not have a ticket?
YES- spectators are welcome from either Three Roads Brewery, or at the base of the slide by the Kona Ice Truck in front of the 12th street intersection. Please be aware that 12th street is open to through traffic and this portion of the road will not be closed, please watch for vehicles.
PARKING
Where do I park?
When you arrive we encourage you to utilize ANY of the parking lots denoted here.
Please note that all on street parking on the closed block of church will not be available, and in general on-street parking is first come first serve. There are several lots in close proximity to Hill City Slide, so please prepare to arrive early to find your spot! There are lots of activities happening in downtown Lynchburg over the weekend, so arriving early with enough time to find parking is essential.
CHECK-IN
Where do I check in and when?
We suggest arriving at least 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled time slot to check-in at our registration/box office located at the Lynchburg Armory.
Be sure to have your tickets or your order confirmation ready to ensure a swift check-in. Tickets will arrive via email from Tickets@boxoffice.academycenter.org exactly 48 hours before your slide time.
Will additional tickets be available?
MAYBE? This event is almost sold out. If you need additional tickets for your time slot it is best to pre-purchase to ensure they are available on arrival. Timeslots cannot exceed 225 sliders and exceptions will not be made.
Do I need to sign a waiver in person?
Most ticket holders signed a waiver when purchasing tickets, but for larger groups that did not complete this process, please plan to sign waivers in person, and have a parent/guardian present to sign for sliders under the age of 18. ALL sliders must have a signed waiver before sliding. If this was not completed when purchasing tickets you will be asked to do so at check-in.
How do I know my child is tall enough to ride along?
Children under the age of 3 should not plan to ride the slide. If you feel your child is tall enough even under this age restriction, please ask someone at box office before assuming your child can slide. There will be a height indicator at check-in. Please ensure your child meets the height requirement to ride alone. If they do not, they will need to ride along with an accompanying adult on the child/ adult lane only.
SLIDING & MORE
Will there be a place to leave my belongings?
Yes, but this will be at your own risk. We will have an area in the armory available after check-in where you can leave small items, shoes and towels in clear bags that will be numbered with a coordinating number added to your wristband. All items are not the responsibility of UWCV or Urban Slide and are left at your own risk. Additionally, items should not be brought on the slide. If you do not plan to use the drop area in the armory, please plan to leave personal items in your vehicle.
Are phones allowed?
YES, phones are allowed, but they will get wet. We suggest waterproof covering if you plan to document your experience with your phone. If you do take videos or photos, please tag Hill City Slide and United Way of Central VA with #HillCitySlide.
Will there be food or water for purchase on-site?
YES. We will have shaved ice options with Kona Ice and water for sale inside the armory.
Your wristband will also allow you discounts at many local restaurants and retailers downtown. AFTER you slide, please plan to enjoy downtown with the following wristband partners:
