United Way Privacy Policy

The purpose of our Privacy Policy is to inform donors and the public about the types of information we gather, how we may use that information, whether we disclose it to anyone, and the choices affected parties have regarding our use of the information.

This Privacy Policy applies to United Way of Central Virginia, Inc. No other organizations or agencies are covered by this Privacy Policy except for certain workplace campaigns for which separate policies are posted.

Information Which We Collect

Donors, volunteers, and other affected parties may choose to voluntarily supply us with personal information, such as name or associated company name, e-mail address, postal address, home or work telephone number and credit card information for purposes such as correspondence, registering for a service, making a donation, or other requests.

Use of User Information

We may use the information that we collect for any of the following purposes:

Transactional. We may use information in order to respond to queries and requests, manage accounts, process donations and other transactions submitted by affected parties and communication about transactions that have been requested.

Marketing. We may use personal information in order to communicate about the United Way of Central Virginia campaign, volunteer opportunities and other information related to our organization.

Analysis and Maintenance. We may use information for internal marketing analysis, to better understand our donor base, to select potential donors or community partners, to help us improve the design of our web site or other marketing tools, or to better meet the needs of donors, volunteers, or other affected parties.

Sharing of Information

Except as provided in this Privacy Policy, we will not disclose, sell or rent information to any third party, including nonprofit organizations or direct marketing firms, unless specifically requested by the affected donors, volunteers, or other owners of the information.

We may share personally identifiable information with affiliates and trusted third parties who assist us by providing services including, but not limited to, solicitations, surveys, credit card processing, fulfillment processing, e-mail distribution, and website management.

We may also share personally identifiable information with non-profit organizations in order to process donations to, or requests for volunteer or other information from, such organizations unless the donor, volunteer or other owner of such information requests that information not be shared. We do not control the use of information once it is shared with such non-profit organizations.

We may disclose information we collect if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that disclosure is necessary (a) to obey the law or comply with legal process served on us or our affiliates; (b) to protect and defend our rights or property or the rights or property of other users; or (c) to act in an emergency to protect the personal safety of users of our website or the public.

If we merge or are combined with any other organization, or if we transfer all or substantially all of our assets or operations to another organization, we may disclose information to the other organization so that the other organization can continue to provide services to donors and the public. The other organization will be bound by this Privacy Policy.


We may provide referrals or links to web sites operated by third parties, such as links to third party organization web sites. We do not monitor the privacy practices of these other organizations or linked web sites and do not exercise authority over such organizations and web sites. We therefore assume no responsibility for the privacy and data collection policies and procedures of these agencies or linked web sites, nor for their claims, representations, content or reliability.

Data Security Commitment

To decrease the risk of unauthorized access, to maintain data accuracy, and to help ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place certain physical, electronic, and administrative procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect. Notwithstanding our efforts to protect information, no security system is completely impenetrable, so we cannot guarantee the absolute security of our databases, nor can we guarantee that information supplied to us will not be intercepted while in transit to us over the Internet or through other means.

Contacting Us; Opting Out

At the request of the donor, volunteer, or other affected party, we will confirm what personal information we hold, update said information, remove such information, fulfill specific opt-out requests, including requests where the donor, volunteer or other affected party previously opted-in with respect to the use of personal information, and/or correct any inaccuracies in such personal information if we are contacted using the details provided below.
