Smart Beginnings Central Virginia (SBCV) is an early childhood initiative that brings together community leaders from school systems, community services, business and private individuals to work together to ensure that every child in Central Virginia enters kindergarten with the skills needed to succeed in school and in life.
Children who succeed in kindergarten are more likely to be proficient readers in third grade. Third grade reading is a powerful predictor of future school success, high school graduation, higher education or work force participation.
SBCV serves the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and the City of Lynchburg. Its Virginia Quality also serves Nelson County.
SBCV strategies include:
- Ensuring that the early childhood education work-force in Central Virginia receives high quality, on-going professional development and training opportunities
- Enhancing the quality of area child care and preschool programs through the implementation of Virginia Quality, the state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System
- Empowering parents to meet the developmental needs of their children through Parent Education programs, and home-school partnerships that provide family engagement opportunities that enhance learning at-home
- A diverse, dedicated coalition to identify regional needs and implement strategies to address issues that affect young children
