After conducting an extensive national search and interviewing many highly qualified candidates, the Board of the United Way of Central Virginia has selected Bill Varner to serve as President/CEO of the organization beginning August 1st, 2017. Bill has over 30 years of experience in corporate strategic planning and marketing, and for the past 16 years has served the Vice President of Strategic Planning, Marketing and Communications with Centra. Bill comes to United Way with a strong background in organizational strategic planning, consumer research, branding, marketing, public relations and communications.
“Bill provides a wealth of professional experience. Most specifically in creating and executing strategic plans. His professional experience and past board experience will be very valuable to the future of United Way,” said United Way Board Chair, Patrick Richardson.
When accepting the position, Bill stated, “I feel honored to have been selected to join the talented team of staff and volunteers at the United Way of Central Virginia, and I look forward to working with local leaders across the region to have a positive, meaningful impact in the lives of those who need us the most.” Bill earned his Masters of Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and has served on the boards of several organizations in Central Virginia including James River Day School, the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, Amazement Square, Piedmont Community Health Plan, and of course, United Way of Central Virginia. Bill and his wife Catherine live in Lynchburg with their children, Julia and Will.
