It’s real. Hunger. It lives in Central Virginia just like everywhere else and it impacts the lives of so many. Did you know that United Way of Central Virginia’s partner agencies served 213,220 meals to those in need in 2015? This is a 200% increase than years prior. That is staggering. 48% of children in our area under the age of 18 are at risk of going hungry. 48%!!!!!!! Can you even imagine one of your children going to bed HUNGRY??? This happens because over 21% of children under the age of 17 live in poverty in Central VA. Just one more hard to swallow statistic- no pun intended. It is time to make a change and YOU can help. UWCV hosts an annual food drive that is taking place right now in your area. This food drive benefits 11 area food banks that are in deficit in the month of October. Agencies such as Dawn, Bedford Christian Ministries, Lake Christian Ministries, Park View Community Mission, Rivermont Area Food Pantry, Piedmont Community Impact, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Salvation Army, Missionary Food Bank, REAP and New Prospect Baptist Church Food Pantry. During this drive, we collect non-perishable items that you can get at your local grocery store. Luckily- Kroger has decided to partner with us this year and at any of our area Kroger stores, you can purchase items and donate them right there.
