Sustaining Our Students – Backpack Program
United Way of Central Virginia is proud to be entering its fifth year of the Sustaining Our Students (S.O.S.) Backpack Program. The program currently provides 10 meals and snacks and juice packed in a backpack every weekend during the school year to children who have been identified as “food insecure” by a teacher, counselor, or by a parent, and possibly without a reliable food source on the weekends. Each backpack is filled with non-perishable items and we are currently hoping to serve a total of 140 children at Big Island Elementary, Paul Munro Elementary, Perrymont Elementary, and Rustburg Elementary with this program for the upcoming school year. It is estimated it costs to fill the backpack a minimum of $10 per child per week, and an average cost of $360.00 per year per child (36 weeks – includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter packs).
The S.O.S. program, part of UWCV’s and Smart Beginnings partnership in the Central Virginia School Readiness Initiative, will cost approximately $50,400.00 for AY 2017-18 and relies solely on grants and donations to support it. If you would like to give non-perishable food items, backpacks to the program, please contact Dawn Wise, Director, Community Engagement and Public Relations, firstname.lastname@example.org.
