2017 Read for the Record

Read for the Record is an annual, national event by Jumpstart.org. Every year in October, on the same day, at roughly the same time, children all over the U.S. hear the same book read to them by a caring adult. Smart Beginnings Central Virginia organizes the local event, recruiting volunteers to give an hour of their time visiting a preschool class, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, or a childcare center to read the book of the year. In 2016, 6,500 children were read to, breaking our local Read for the RECORD!

This year’s book is Quackers, by Liz Wong, and the local, Central Virginia Read for the Record Initiative hopes to not only read to all classes pre-K to 2nd grade in the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and the City of Lynchburg, but also raise enough money to leave the book behind for the classroom to keep and enjoy again and again. Additionally, if funds and volunteers are available, we plan to read to daycares and preschools in the area for a total of 240 classes throughout the region. The cost of each book is $10.00 (sponsor recognition on labels inside books is available. Please contact karen.wesley@unitedwaycv.org for sponsor options.)
